My Communion

I didn't want to write for this blend. Something so sacred. How can I call coffee  communion? But then I remember in Acts 27:35 where communion is being taken on a ship during a storm. And in Corinthians 11:20-22 communion was a whole meal. In that culture bread and wine were common foods available. Those foods are things that some people are allergic to now and some just don't have the ability to constantly keep on hand. I learned it's not as much about what we eat or drink as it is about the intentionality. The "often" that we are told to "eat and drink in remembrance of Him." I Corinthians 11:25-26

But wait. Doesn't the bible say something about dying if we drink without discerning the body? 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 Does that mean if I don't pick the right bread type, His body, then I'll die? No. So in context of when that was written, the believers in Corinth were treating Communion, or, the Lord's Supper casually. As in they were feasting and letting others go hungry with some of them even getting drunk. The "body" is a group of believers. And often phrasing used throughout Paul's letters, as a collective group of people who believe in Jesus as their Savior. They had a couple of blunders with communion (the Lord's supper).

First they were not acting in holy reverence and meeting as a unit. They were divided and excluding people based on rank and station. Cultural divides is something Paul fought hard against throughout his ministry. Second was they were not looking out for others and serving one another. It goes on to expound in 1 Corinthians 30-34 about examining our own hearts and instructing them to look out for everyone. But I want to add one more layer that is very important to remember when it comes to communion

In Matthew 26:28 Jesus says, "This is My blood covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins". Even in the Lord's prayer He states "Give us this day, our daily bread. And forgive us our debts and we forgive our debtors?" What is He saying? He is linking bread and blood/wine and forgiveness. He is saying "I forgive you, you forgive them." and doing that in the act of taking communion is purposefully forgiving and being forgiven. Remembering He poured out Himself and paid it all. 

What is the "often" that we should be taking communion? That is between you and the Lord. I will say, He proved He's more about the heart then legalities. In 1 Samuel 21:1-6  David ate the show bread from the temple that was only for priests to eat. This was such a big deal that Jesus Himself references it to show the nature of the Father (Matthew 12:3-4). Remember this,  especially when you hear a voice that tries to lock you into legalities over heart intentions. I'm not saying don't be reverent. But it's always been about relationship. He knows our hearts. And sometimes if all we have is a cup of coffee and a prayer forgiving others and thanking Him for forgiveness. That can be just as holy as communion in a church. 

I want to also say from my experience. Taking communion often, in whatever form you can, intentionally, will change your heart. You will experience a deep love for Jesus like nothing you thought was possible. Will it transform your whole world? Possibly. Solve all your problems?  Not likely. But there is a closeness with His presence, with His Spirit, that i have noticed is completely unique, potent and special. Specifically with communion. Read Matthew 26-29, Mark 14: 22-25, Luke 22: 17-20, John 6:48-58, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, and 11:23-26 as you thank Him for His sacrifice drinking and eating what you can. As often as  "often" means for you. With a forgiving heart. That's the most important part.

May you find refreshing in His presence ( Acts 3:19-20) And His Spirit fill you with His life.
