Pecan Pie

All of the planning, the cooking, the researching recipes has all led up to this.,Thanksgiving day with all of my loved ones around the table. Everyone knows the real treasure isn't the pie, the turkey or the questionable stuffing. It's the fellowship, the laughs, and the stories. After the prayer have been said, the turkey eaten, the gravy scrutinized, and the pie has been served; this is the perfect companion. It lasts longer than dessert and the warm coffee aids in digesting all the food that was consumed. 

I sit back and relax on the couch. an animated retelling of a family member sharing their most embarrassing moment, is in full swing. I laugh and take a sip. The first taste is a deep roasted pecan flavor, enveloped by this warm buttery smoothness. Caramelized sugar rolls in behind it. Thick and unhurried. Then  settles into this unmistakable browned butter flavor at the end. Nutty, rich, and lingering. Just long enough to make me close my eyes and savor it. I wonder to myself why it tastes better than the actual pecan pie. And if I should have skipped the calories and just gone straight for the coffee. 

This moment is the moment the whole day comes to a rest. Being present and enjoying the simple things becomes a treasure. With a cup of Pecan Pie to savor the experience.
