Hojicha

"I'm not doing caffeine." she said. I looked at my impromptu house guest and wondered what else I can give her to drink. I already planned on having matchas with the meal I made for us. I looked in my cupboard and rummaged past my coffee collection to a bag on the side. I pulled it out. It was a bag of Hojicha that a friend from work had given me this past holiday. I looked and saw that it had less caffeine."Will this work?" I asked her, holding up the bag like I was displaying a designer handbag.

Her eyes lit up. "Oh, I love that stuff!" I smiled and quickly made her a cup. She raved about the smell of the roasted barley and puffed rice. The taste of charred oats with a savory broth like richness. She said it wasn't bitter as all and left a warm toasted wood taste in her mouth. As we continued to enjoy our afternoon sandwiches, we spoke of places we wanted to visit. Unexpectedly, we grew closer that day.
